“ I have visted many people and place

who are indicative of live in the city today.

Too many list. All these experiences are coming together

in the songs.”

Emmy the Great

I came in on a ship

just like everybody did

When the tide was rolling in

I saw that I wast here

An island in the bay

Stone king on arock

You’ll carry it forever

There’s magic in the air

This is the time, these are the days

This is the life, this is the place

Can’t let it go, it’s in your veins

Listen to the pianos play

Gets into your bones

It starts to feel like home

We are not the first

Who placed our feet upon this earth

On these rocks that fell from heaven

Onto the sea

They came for war, they came for trade

They came for love, they came for faith

And everyone who came here

Found the irdestiny

This is the time, these are the days

This is the life, this is the place

Can’t let it go, it’s in your veins

Listen to the pianos play

This is the time, these are the days

This is the life, this is the place

Can’t let it go, it’s in your veins

Listen to the pianos play

Gets into your bones

It starts to feel like home

Emmy,

What’s your first impression of Kulangsu?

I approached it on the ferry and saw Zheng Chenggong, so I asked my translator, Iris, who he was. When we arrived, we walked through the commercial area to get to my hotel. It was a very hot day. I was overwhelmed by the people and the sounds, and the lush vegetation. Then I started noticing the abandoned buildings and the trees that fell during Hurricane Meranti. Those were my observations in the first hour of arrival.

A word or a couple of words to sum up your life on Gulang Island?

Why would you choose this/these words?

Magical. I found in Xiamen and on Gulangyu that everything I wished for came true. I think a lot of people have this experience there! It’s something about the sea or the rocks, or the history. You feel a lot of ghosts, and the imprints of other people’s memories.

03

The island is now applying for recognition as a Cultural World Heritage Site, what’s your opinion about that?

I think it should be honoured. It’s such a unique and interesting destination. I hope more people can read about it, and the ways it has affected and moved travellers through the ages.

04

As a staff writer, you wrote a story named Buddhist folk and pyrotechnics: Emmy the Great on a musical sojourn in China; as a musician, you are putting several elements about Gulang Island into your new album. Actually, you are also playing a role as a communicator devoting yourself into introducing Gulang Island to the world. What’s you comment about that?

My experiences on Gulangyu and in Xiamen were my first experience of China, and that was life-changing for me. I was welcomed by the musicians who live in Xiamen, and by my hosts, and by everyone I met. It changed my life! So of course I want to talk about it all the time, and make my music about it.

05

If Gulang Island is declared as a Cultural World Heritage Site on July, what will you like to say to the island or those inhabitants?

Keep being yourselves, because it is the people on the island, and their kindness, that gives it that unique and special status in the hearts of visitors.

06

What’s your expectation to Gulang Island? When will you come again?

I’m coming back soon. I hope to perform my album there.
